About the Role:
Fortress Recruitment is working with Thurrock Council to recruit a Health and Safety Inspector to join their Public Protection Team. This role is vital in ensuring the council meets its statutory duties regarding health and safety enforcement, contributing to a high-quality, responsive Environmental Health service for the borough.
As Health and Safety Inspector, you will play a key role in delivering effective, efficient, and impartial enforcement of relevant legislation, while supporting the council’s wider corporate objectives and maintaining public protection standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Enforce health and safety legislation, associated guidance, and best practices within the borough.
Respond to service requests, complaints, and incidents involving health and safety matters in workplaces.
Undertake inspections, investigations, and audits to ensure compliance with statutory requirements.
Provide expert advice to businesses, employers, and members of the public on health and safety standards and responsibilities.
Prepare reports, legal documentation, and evidence to support enforcement actions where necessary.
Liaise with key stakeholders including Planning, Housing, Property Services, Fire & Rescue, Police, HSE, HM Coroner, DBT, and other local authorities.
Contribute to the delivery of a comprehensive environmental health service that aligns with council and government policies.
Work collaboratively with Environmental Health, Licensing, Trading Standards, and other relevant council departments.
About You:
✅ Experience working in health and safety enforcement within a local authority or similar regulatory setting.
✅ Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, including health and safety law, codes of practice, and enforcement protocols.
✅ Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage with businesses, partner agencies, and members of the public.
✅ Able to manage investigations, inspections, and enforcement processes effectively and professionally.
✅ Collaborative and adaptable, with the ability to work with multiple stakeholders internally and externally.
✅ Self-motivated with strong report writing and organisational skills.
