The North London Waste Authority (NLWA) serves over two million residents across seven boroughs with a mission to preserve resources and protect the environment for future generations.

NLWA runs campaigns to help residents reduce waste, recycle more, and take meaningful action against the climate crisis. The organisation delivers sustainability education programmes in schools and is leading the North London Heat and Power Project — building the greenest Energy Recovery Facility in the UK at Edmonton EcoPark.

Role Overview

Camden Council is seeking a Recycling Advisor to support the North London Waste Authority’s recycling and sustainability campaigns.

The successful candidate will engage directly with residents and businesses to increase recycling participation, reduce contamination, and encourage sustainable waste practices. This is a public-facing role requiring excellent communication, community engagement, and environmental awareness.

Working Pattern:

  • Tuesday – Saturday, 10:00am – 6:00pm (with flexibility for earlier/later shifts when required).

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct surveys and assessments of residential properties to identify recycling participation and barriers.

  • Carry out door-to-door engagement and community outreach to promote food, packaging, and household recycling.

  • Provide practical advice and guidance to residents on correct recycling and waste reduction.

  • Support campaigns by distributing leaflets, attending events, and promoting key environmental messages.

  • Capture feedback, monitor participation, and report findings to help refine local campaigns.

  • Work collaboratively with communications, collection, and enforcement teams to improve recycling outcomes.

  • Maintain accurate records of visits, surveys, and engagement activities.

  • Contribute insights to support NLWA’s wider communication and education programmes.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with confidence engaging the public.

  • Experience in community engagement, outreach, or sustainability roles.

  • Knowledge of recycling, waste management, or environmental practices desirable.

  • Ability to work independently in the community and manage own schedule.

  • Accurate record keeping and basic data entry/IT skills.

  • Positive, enthusiastic, and approachable manner with commitment to sustainability.
